Sights on A Sunday Afternoon

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

Saw this label graffiti featuring “Fire Breathing Frank” on a walk down Delaware Avenue this afternoon:

Mail Label Graffiti

Not too much after snapping that picture, I turned on Academy Street past the Aetna firehouse just as the fire truck was making its way out of the building:

The Firemen Prepare to Depart

Hopefully they won’t have a run in with Frank.

The Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder Company has a blog of sorts, where they provide some information in the form of incident reports on the front page of their site.

Newarking on Something Awful

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

A thoughtful thread at the Something Awful forum from a couple of days ago, is this happening to any other college towns?, discusses the condominiums that are being build where the old Stone Balloon was located, as well as similar development in other college towns. It also points to a post here that I wrote on the closing of the Stone Balloon.

The thread spans a couple of pages, and there are posts from past and present Newarkers on the Condos, and on living in Newark. The conversation covers a number of other campuses, and similar development happening on many of those.

I’m going to have to take some photos of the construction at the site tomorrow and add them to this post. (Have done that now.)

When Condos Invade

This is the new condo building, on the former grounds of the Stone Balloon, in Newark, Delaware.

Washington House Condos on Main

Even partially built (It is going to get taller), the building dominates the space around it on Main Street. It’s also the only building on the street that stretches from Main Street to Delaware Avenue, which runs parallel to Main Street. As far as buildings on Main Street go, it may be the largest.

Join Me in Reviewing Newark Businesses at Yelp

Friday, March 16th, 2007

I just signed up at Yelp, which is a review site, and added a review. You can visit my Yelp Profile to see what one looks like, and what I’ve reviewed so far. I spend a lot of time at different shops and eateries on Mainstreet, so I’m going to try to provide reviews for many of those places.

It would be great to see others add some reviews.

Dawn Difference Diaries Coming to Town

Friday, October 20th, 2006

Saw a commercial today on Dawn detergent, and their efforts towards helping with wildlife rehabilitation. I visited their web site, and found this - Dawn® Difference Diaries.

Seems like they are sending a blogger (contest winner Christy Buckley) to six of the best wildlife rehabilitation clinics in the country. One of those is the Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research Center in Newark.

Nice to see Tri-State getting attention like this.

Hope you have fun while visiting Delaware, Christy.

Editing Newark in the Wikipedia

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

If you’re not familiar with the wikipedia, you’re missing one of the more interesting sites on the web.

There’s a page in the wikipedia devoted solely to Newark, Delaware.  I made a couple of updates to the page, replacing our former District 6 representative with the newly elected Stu Markham, and adding a little more to the history of the University of Delaware.

If you’d like to add to the Newark wikipedia pages, it’s not too hard to do.  If you have any questions, or need some help, feel free to ask me.
