Newark (and Newarking) Settles in to Summer Mode

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Like most of Newark, we at Newarking have settled in to summer mode.  We can travel down Main Street at 5 PM again, the shops and restaurants are not as crowded or noisy and people watching has dwindled.

We will post as news demands and time permits over the summer.  Until the new school year begins, we wish you a happy summer.

Back on the Road Again

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Well, spring lasted about two weeks here this year so I finally got out on the road with my bike.  I barely made it before May - Delaware Bike Month.  Not having seen my friend Steve in a while, I decided to head over to his house.  After a nice visit and rest I headed up Red Mill Road to Paper Mill Road.  This part of the ride was into the teeth of a stiff wind.  It was a nice ride and I mapped it here.  Here is the elevation map of the ride:

The Bike Month Ride of Silence event will touch Newark.  For more information visit one of our two large bicycle dealers on Main Street.

Bike Line : 212 East Main Street Newark, DE 19711

Wooden Wheels : 301 Newark Shopping Center Newark, DE 19711

Further information about biking in and around Newark is available from the White Clay Bicycle Club.  They are even offering rider information tags for your helmet for free.  They hold a number of rides during the week and on weekends in and around Newark.  If you have never riden in a group, this is a great place to start.

My goal is to once again ride in the MS Society Bike to the Bay event.  My ride report from last year is available here.  I WILL make it this time!

Mapping Newarks Parks in Google

Sunday, April 8th, 2007

The City of Newark has a great number of parks and recreation areas, including playgrounds and tennis courts, as well as some terrific places to hike. For instance, the Newark Reservoir allows you to see the tops of a lot of the City from its raised elevation.

A View from the Top of the Newark Reservoir

With the help of a City of Newark Map to Area Parks, I’ve started to create a Google Map to Newark Parks and Recreation areas. It’s not completely finished, but I think it’s off to a good start.

Not at all what you would expect

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

With all that is happening in Newark these days, perhaps the last thing you would expect is a bald eagle sighting. Veteran birder and Tri-State Bird Rescue employee Rachael Coffey sighted the bald eagle while driving down Main Street this afternoon at 1:35 PM.

The bald eagle is making a comeback in Delaware under the watchful eye of DNREC and Newark is surrounded by bodies of water within 10-20 miles so I guess they see us more than we see them.

Getting on the Radio

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Something I’ve been thinking about doing for a while, just to have some fun, and gain some experience doing is getting involved with the local University radio station. The call letters are WVUD, and the station number is 91.3 FM.

The station is non-commercial, and their stated mission is:

…to serve the University of Delaware, to serve Newark, our city of license, and to train students interested in broadcasting.

As a music lover, I think this might be something I enjoy. The station broadcasts at 1,000 watts, 24 hours a day. I’ve known a few people who worked at the station, with late night, or very early morning shows.

Their Policies and Procedures handbook (pdf) is online. Learned something from it within a few minutes of starting to read it:

The FCC has set aside the lower portion of the FM band, from 88.1 to 91.9 megahertz (MHz) for non-commercial, educational radio stations.

And I thought it was a coincidence. Looks like I have some learning to do.

Early Days at Newarking

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

I decided that part of the strength of this site will be a transparency to how the site is operated, and how it will grow.

With the second day of posting comes the addition of a few new links in the column to the right.

I’ve added links to the Newark Post, the Wilmington News Journal, the UD Review and UDaily from the University of Delaware, and radio station WILM.  I’m hoping that I can find some local alternative news resources, but I wonder if something like that exists.

I know that there are a few blogs in the local vicinity, and I’ll be adding those shortly, and maybe sending an email to their authors saying hello, and letting them know that there’s a new blog in town.

It’s a cold, damp day here in Newark, with clouds covering much of the sky.  Not much of a start for the first day of spring - it looks like winter won’t go easy into the past.  Scattered flurries are expected for this afternoon, though I haven’t seen any yet.

There’s a lot of tweaking that needs to be done on the site yet, but I’ve found a nice plugin for this software that makes tracking future events easier, and I’ll be trying to implement that over the next few days.  Hopefully, you’ll be able to come to Newarking to find out things to do in town pretty soon.

Welcome to Newarking

Monday, March 20th, 2006

Like many people, I first came to Newark, Delaware, to attend the University of Delaware.  After earning a degree in English, I decided to stay, and make the town my home.  I attended law school at Widener University School of Law, and worked for the Superior Court of Delaware for a number of years before I left to join an internet marketing firm.

I started this site because I think that there’s a void that needs to be filled online about the town, and the State.  I’m hoping that these pages provide a chance for me to take a look at Newark’s past, chronicle the present, and provide information about future events around town.

If you would like to join me in writing about Newark, please get in touch.
